BBC Olympics 2004 Title Sequence

The Olympics are always special, but with the 2004 Games returning to their ancient home in Athens, they required an almost Herculean design effort.

To herald their coverage, BBC Sport wanted a title sequence that reflected the sheer power and skill of the games, as well as emphasising the unique significance of their return to Greece. The titles were to be shown frequently during the 16 day event, so an additional challenge was to make them rich and layered enough to bear repeated viewing.

With 'journeying home' at the heart of the idea, we devised a 'heroic' sequence following a torch bearer as he runs through the dramatic landscape of ancient Greece. En route he encounters epic visions of athletes in the form of the natural elements; wind, fire, earth, air, water and light.

Collaborating with BBC Resources, the production involved location shooting in Greece as well as in a London green screen studio.

The finished sequence received plaudits throughout the industry, culminating in a BAFTA nomination for best titles.
