BBC’s Interactive Red Button

In the UK, the growth of digital distribution has inspired our BBC clients to rapidly expand their interactive, or ‘red button’, services. These allow viewers to opt–out of the linear programme stream to access a broad range of related content and navigational information.

Here at Red Bee Media, we’ve been delighted to be at the forefront of this development, providing playout of BBC interactive content for sports, music, news and live events, plus interactive games and quizzes.

To put this into some sort of context: in 2004, over nine million viewers ‘pressed red’ to access the BBC’s interactive Olympic service, where they could enjoy the sporting event of their choice. This is a great example of an advance in TV technology (in this case provided by our state-of-the-art Broadcast Centre) offering viewers unprecedented choices and experiences.
