Piero is a revolutionary sports analysis device that allows viewers to see play from angles that can't be captured by conventional cameras.

Eagerly adopted by sportcasters around the world - including BBC, ITV, Sky Sports Italia, TV Globo Brazil and i-CABLE Hong Kong - it allows on-screen talent to illustrate their commentary with unseen perspectives and dynamic graphics. It will:

– Lay tracks of players across the pitch whilst revealing speed and distance travelled
– Perform a virtual fly-through of the stadium
– Place scores, text, images and pointers in 'live' video
– Offer a choice of user interfaces
– Place virtual advertising on the pitch
– Provide a unique, seamless transition between original and virtual stadium

But the true beauty of Piero lies in its line detection software and chromakey calibration. In layman terms, this means that it doesn't rely on a highly expensive, multi-camera set-up to provide its data. And unlike traditional telestration devices, it allows graphics to be applied in a 3D perspective, so that they appear 'tied to field' in moving video.

What's more, because Piero doesn't rely on live video capture, it can be used to analyse archive footage as well as repurposed content for mobile phones and small screens.

Named after the 15th Century Italian artist Piero Della Francesco (whose work uniquely combined mathematics with a love of perspective) we hope this renaissance man would be secretly proud that his 21st Century namesake is shedding new light on age-old flashpoints - like the offside rule and the forward pass.

"Brazilians are absolutely crazy about football and, as the largest broadcaster in South America, TV Globo is always looking for the best technology available to analyse and illustrate 'play' in new and interesting ways. After the World Cup, we will continue to use Piero in our coverage of Brazil's national league football."
José Manuel Mari, Sports & News Engineering Director, TV Globo

"Hong Kong Cable is the top football television station in Hong Kong. Piero's virtual stadium feature is completely unique to the market of sports analysis tools. We bought Piero because we wanted to make sure that we delivered the best possible coverage of the World Cup to our viewers and will continue to use the technology in our coverage of the English Premier League in Hong Kong."
