ABOUT US

The history of Piero dates back to 1977 when the team first started creating graphics  for BBC weather, elections & sport. The BBC's focus was always the user interface, it had to be simple to implement,  operate and support. This clear vision has made Piero what it is today.

 

OUR HISTORY

 

1977 – 2004

  • The BBC computer graphics workshop (CGW) group is created to add graphics to BBC programming Highlights of this work pre Piero are:
  • Created the BBC spinning globe that ran on the BBC for 30 years
  • Produced the 1st computerised weather graphics on British TV in the 1980’s
  • Created the football results system shown on BBC Grandstand
  • Added computer graphics to the 1984 Olympics for the 1st time
  • Created graphics for the 1987, 92, 97  general election

 

2002

  • Original “Caspar” work performed by BBC Research to create a "tied to field" system possible on standard PC hardware.
  • Dialogue with BBC Sport on turning Caspar into a practical system
  • Virtual Players were invented

 

2004

  • The BBC wanted a new graphics to enhance their football coverage to mark the return of Match of the day to the BBC
  • BBC Sport, BBC Broadcast (forerunner of Red Bee Media) and BBC R&D began work on the Piero system using the “Caspar” work as a way to reduce the reliance on camera heads in the stadium
  • The Piero product was born
  • Piero's core USP enabled broadcasters to analyse any football match either live or historic

 

2005

  • BBC broadcast became Red Bee Media in summer 2005
  • Red Bee Media demonstrated the Piero system at IBC in September

 

2006

  • 6 new customers added to the Piero customer list
  • Piero developed to support NTSC & HD 1080i and 720p

 

2007

  • 2 new customers added to the Piero customer list
  • 3D player module created
  • Piero adds support of multiple character sets including Arabic
  • Virtual advertising proposition developed

 

2008

  • 9 new customers added to the Piero customer list
  • Piero Live feature launched to add graphics in game
  • Player line-up feature launched
  • 3D Animated players launched

 

2009 so far ...

  • 9 new customers added to the Piero customer list
  • Piero is technically integrated with SportVu & TrackAB
  • Piero develop sponsored effects to deliver further revenue generating opportunities to broadcasters
  • Red Bee integrate “texture tracking” into the Piero code to increase sports coverage
  • New web site launched
